A good week.
For everyone.

Plan the shift with the whole operation in view.

INTERFACE STUDY
01 / The starting point

A schedule carries more than names and times

Builder’s notes
Deependra Sai Kumar Reddy

Working in restaurant operations changed how I understood scheduling. A shift holds expected demand, employee availability, role coverage, experience, handovers, and last-minute changes. When that information is scattered, the manager becomes the person responsible for remembering and connecting it all before service begins.

Skift grew from that operational experience in Sweden. The visible starting point was a calendar, but the larger need was a connected view of the day. Managers, shift leaders, and team members each face different decisions, even when they are working from the same schedule.

The product direction combines a manager-facing web platform with an employee-facing mobile experience. Scheduling, communication, tasks, and sales-aware planning belong to one operational picture. AI assistance is intended to explain suggested changes and surface conflicts while leaving the manager responsible for the final decision.

02 / The experience

A proposed shift-planning journey

01

Understand the week ahead

The proposed manager view brings availability, role coverage, and expected sales pressure into the planning conversation. The aim is to see a staffing need in its context, including the experience required during a busy window, before assigning names to shifts.

02

Review the recommendation

AI-assisted planning would offer a starting point and explain the reason for a suggestion. A manager could inspect a coverage gap or a conflict, adjust the plan, and retain control over publication. The explanation is part of the proposed interaction.

03

Carry clarity into the shift

After publication, the employee experience is intended to make schedules, updates, and assigned work easy to find. Shift leaders need a view of today’s team and priorities; team members need to understand their own work and what has changed.

03 / Behind the decisions

Decisions shaped by the restaurant floor

01

Give each role a useful view

The concept distinguishes planning from shift execution and individual work. A manager needs control, a shift leader needs readiness, and a team member needs clarity. The same underlying operation should support those different levels of responsibility.

02

Explain the suggested action

A warning should say why it matters. The AI direction favours suggestions tied to coverage, demand, or workload, so the manager can evaluate the reasoning instead of accepting an unexplained generated schedule.

03

Connect planning with communication

A schedule change only helps when the relevant people understand it. Bringing messages, updates, and tasks into the product direction recognises that operational coordination continues after the calendar has been published.

04 / Where it stands

Product concept and active build

Skift is an active product concept shaped by firsthand operational work. The interface studies and presentation use illustrative data. Sales, weather, payroll, and other integrations are directions for exploration; this account does not present them as live connections or claim deployed scheduling outcomes.

The next questions

The next questions belong to real workflows

Which information would a manager need before trusting a staffing suggestion? How should an urgent change reach everyone affected without adding noise? Further exploration should test those workflows and establish the data, constraints, and explanations needed before more automated planning becomes useful.
